The span is measured by placing the thumb in a spring-loaded cavity and placing the hand over a span grid. On the oher side of the grid is another spring-loaded cavity, which measures the angle of the thumb oval. Around the surface of the ball is a complete range of 40 finger and thumb holes sized in 1/64'' increments.
